I’ve come across a varied array of AE86 toys in the collections of grown men! (myself included). So it’s suffice to say that most AE86 owners are kids at heart. There are a large number of dedicated toy manufacturers out there whose catalogues include items that we probably shouldn’t be spending money on, but somehow always do.
Below is a extensive list of AE86 Toys most of which is still available for purchase, there are however a large number of discontinued items. What good is it listing them? JAPAN THE ORIGINAL AND THE BEST?
Following is a list of Japanese manufacturers. Naturally you’d think that the Japanese models of all kinds would be of the better quality, this might be true in some respects but it in no way diminshes the quality of other manufacturers. Some of the International stuff is absolutely brilliant, on-par in fact with Japanese toys.
First off your probably wondering what good all this catalogue information is without HR linking you to a place to buy these goods. Well Google is your friend and if you like the sound of an item copy/paste the product code and buy buy buy!

Model building! Yes.. It’s either an art form or a complete waste of your time depending on how much patience you have. Aoshima was established in 1961 in Shizuoka, Japan and they’ve been building great build-it-yourself kits ever since. Aoshima also design a bunch of assembled/painted cars with after market works add-on options in box. They have a various range of items, over different series such as “Best Car GT” and “DISM” and they do cover the distinct Japanese classics! Kit detail varies depending on the edition. Some come with an engine, and others with such things as workable springs!

Ebbro is the trademark of Miniature Model Planning Limited (MMP Ltd.) of Shizuoka Japan. They make a bunch of classic Japanese models that you probably wont find anywhere else (especially outside Japan) Apparently most of their models are made to limited run numbers.

Fujimi is the other big Japanese kit/model manufacturer, Did you know Fujimi is a small village in Gunma prefecture? No? Well Sadly it’s got nothing to do with the production of AE86’s because the company is actually located in Shizuoka. Either way they make some impressive kits and their catalogue is large and expansive (like Aoshima)

So technically this company merged with TOMY from the UK but let’s face it all their AE86 stuff is solely from the Japanese side of things. There’s a lot of rarer models out there by TOMY most of which you and I will never see because they’re sitting in some forgotten toy store in the back streets of the Ginza shopping district in Tokyo! Established in 1963 (wow!) in Tokyo, Japan, Kyosho have been designing and building quality models (die-cast) and R/C cars ever since. They’re actually credited with being the first company to produce Japan’s first R/C car for the public! Their website has an extensive write-up on the history of their RC cars which is probably a worth a story in its own right, It also has some classic black/white photos of certain models back in the day. Currently though they do have official Initial D incensing so that means some great Takumi based R/C cars!

As I’ve already mentioned just because these companies aren’t Japanese it doesnt mean they dont produce some great stuff. Check it all out and see for yourself!
Jada is a large American company founded in 1999, it’s headquarters are located in California and seems focused on delivering a zany collection of die-cast automotive goodness. They first brought out the ‘Import Racer’ line of matchbox (1:64) AE86’s, this was a sure hit with the ‘bling-show-crowd’ but left something to be desired for the authentic AE86 collector (yes.. we all ran out and got them anyway) But all was forgiven because they then released an officially licensed Initial D series of both (1:64) and (1:18) die-cast cars which not only came with the car, but a section of road and authentic figurines to boot! I won’t delve into the detail of all the cars/characters offered but it’s a fine collection.

HPI Racing has a bit of history, the company was started in Costa Mesa, California by Tatsuro Watanabe and a partner with a dream of building the world’s most exciting and innovative high-quality R/C car products. They very shortly then opened an office in Japan and hence now sell their range world-wide. HPI Racing make a fine array of Electric RC cars with various high-quality shell designs available in a few different scale sizes.

OUR PICKS OF THE BEST
Well that’s a bit difficult. ONLY because I’m the type of guy with no time for models I prefer the die-cast stuff; cars by Jada, Autoart and Hotworks are very cool I think but for kits its hard to go past Aoshima or Fujimi.
Hold on HR Blog guys, wheres the love for 1:64 scale cars? You haven’t listed many of them at all!
Well this is true, but we’ve listed most companies and items available. We were going to go through this great website but since there’s no product code info listed we thought we’d just direct you guys there to ogle at the unobtainable!
It’s quite sad at how much stuff has been discontinued, but as I’ve mentioned before It’s kind of like a cool mission? If you ever get over to Japan, to be hunting down some smaller toy stores who perhaps stocked certain goods and never sold them. They’re probably waiting at the bottom of a shelf all dusty for the right owner to come and snap them up!
